A Jedi cruiser is making a pass by of the planet Ova when the planet simply begins disappearing, The ship is caught in the event and destroyed, but not before they send a message to the Jedi Council, letting them know what happened. Three months later, against their better judgement, the Jedi Council sends Quinlan Vos Dathomir in disguise as a crashed pilot, because they suspect that the Dathomiri witches may have something to do with what happened at Ova. According to plan, Quin is captured and sent to work excavating an ancient temple, and quickly makes friends with a Givin named Yag Shushin. His first night there, he learns of Ros Lai, the ugly daughter of the local Matriarch, Zalem, who is universally despised by the rest of the witches. As they night grows later, they are attacked by a rival clan on an expedition to steal slaves and mates. They try to take Quin, but before he is forced to reveal his identity as a Jedi, a ship bursts out of the ground, piloted by the with Vonya, and kills all the aggressors. Quin asks Yag why the witches haven't left if they have a ship and is told that they are looking for an underground chamber to the temple. A short time later, the witches are attempting to breach the Star Chamber below the surface when they are attacked by a giant worm. They fend it off, but it retreats to the surface where it starts eating the slaves. Quin allows himslef to be swallowed, and once inside he kills it with his lightsaber, though he tells the witches that he used a pick. As a reward, he and Yag are assigned to guard the lizard pens where the Kwi are kept. The Kwi are descendants of the Kwa, a race that used Infinity Gates to travel between the stars. The Dathomiri are removing the Kwi's paws and attempting to operate the temple machinery with limited success. Quin admits to Yag that he is a Jedi and on Dathomir to stop the witches, and the two of them concoct a plan. Quin frees the Kwi and Yag steals one of the Subterine ships, but before all the Kwi escape, one touches Quin's hand and passes on the history of its race through Quin's psychometry ability, and informs Quin that because he killed the guardian worm, he needs to take its place. He agrees and then sees Ros Lai watching him. He follows her and falls into a trap but escapes easily and discovers that She is actually a beautiful witch hiding in a disguise. He trys to convince her to join him in stopping her mother, but she informs him that her plan is to kill her mother and take her place, using the Infinity Gates to rule the galaxy. She tries to kill him but is interrupted by Vonya and other witches who praise her on her change. In her anger, she starts to kill them but Vonya proves stronger at the moment so Quin steps in to help Ros as she may be a useful ally in the future. Vonya escapes to tell Zalem what she has learned, and Zalem is pleased at her daughter's cunning, but orders Quin hunted down. They cath him and return him to Zalem, who decides to torture him by injecting him with Artery Worms, a parasite that causes great pain before finally killing him. Elsewhere, Yag finds his ship but Ros is already there. She convinces him to help her rescue Quin from her mother, and they do so with Zalem and Vonya in hot pursuit. Ros provides Quin with an antidote and the two of the trick the witches into thinking they've been destroyed. Quin, Ros and Yag follow the witches into the Star Chamber but find Vonya waiting. She attacks, and Yag gives his life to save the others, and Quin destroys Vonya's ship to avenge him. While they try to catch up to Zalem, she sets the Infinity Wave to target Coruscant. With time running out, Ros and Quin join Zalem as prisoner and captor, and when Zalem wants proof that Ros has had a change of heart, she kills Quin. Ros gets close to Zalem and the illusion of Quin's faked death is revealed. With Zalem momentarily distracted, Ros kills her and takes her place at the head of the clan. As Quin fights for his life, he realizes that thanks to the Kwi, he has the ability to control the ancient death traps. He uses them to kill all the witches except Ros, who he stuns, and then reverses the Infinity Wave. The backlash destroys the Infinity Gate and the Star Chamber, but not before he is able to escape into hyperspace. He returns to Coruscant with his prisoner, and when asked why he saved her when she betrayed him, he claimed it was because he could feel the light side of the Force in her.
