Two years after being left for dead, Hock Malsuum (CT-5539) begins to hear stories of someone who hated the Jedi as much as himself, and set out to find Darth Vader. He rejoins the army and works in Vader's command, where he is soon noticed and promoted to captain. Vader's forces are dispatched to Ostor to suppress a separatist rebellion led by General Atticus Farstar. Leaving commandof the troops to General Rohn results in a disastrous rout when Farstar creates an insulting banner and Rohn orders it destroyed. As the separatists fall back, Hock realizes it's a trap and tries to make Rohn realize that, but Rohn's pride won't allow him to back down. Hock breaks into Rohn's command craft and kills him, but it is too late to save the soldiers. Later, Hock is brought before the Emperor for an explanation, and he puts all the blame on Rohn, earning him Vader's trust and an assignment as his wingman for the new assault from ground and air. The attack proceeds, but it is another trap and Vader takes most of the fighters to defend his cruiser while Hock is left to protect the ground troops. He is shot down by Kaddak, who had joined their little rebellion. Captured, he meets the leaders behind this movement and learns that they don't expect to win, only to inspire others, like Kaddak, to stand up to the Empire. Hoping to end the conflict quickly, he cuts off the power to the shields and realizes that he will have to stop Kaddak as well if he hopes to succeed. He finds Kaddak, only to discover that he isn't the monster he remembers, but he attacks him anyways. They fight and Hock is about to lose, when he decides to start fighting for his own survival, and kills Kaddak. The Imperial forces descend on the city, killing everyone and everything, and when Vader starts to kill the wounded who refuse to bow, Hock realizes that his respect had been misplaced. He deserts the army and finds a woman to marry and they raise a child together. He writes out his memoirs, but destroys them when he realizes just what would happen to his family if he ever passes them on.
