Jedi Master K'kruhk and the Jedi youglings crash land on Arkinnea where they are immediately rounded up and sent to the refugee camps. On Coruscant, Darth Vader is no closer to finding the Uhumele and his new prisoner, Falco Sang, is proving difficult to work with. Once in the camp, K'kruhk is told that they won't be staying long because they will be selected to go to the freelands up north. Leaving the younglings in the care of Piru, K'kruhk explores the camp, but when he returns to their tent, he finds someone inside who turns out to be the supposedly dead Jedi Master Zao. Zao spends some time with the youglings, and when talking to K'kruhk later, he explains that he doesn't know why the Force guided him to them, but that something is wrong and they need to flee. While Darth Vader begins to train with Falco Sang on Coruscant, attempting to get him to overcome his fear of death, the Jedi refugees make their escape from the camp. They make their way ever further away from the main camp while the local militia continue to search for them. After some time traveling, they discover a valley scattered with dead bodies. It appears that the Arkinnean militia is ridding themselves of refugees by loading them into a cargo transport, flying them out to the middle of nowhere, and dropping them to their deaths. The local Imperial liaison, Commander Teron suspects that something is going on to endanger Imperial citizens and so sends a request to Coruscant for additional troops, but is turned down. Meanwhile, another cargo transport arrives and drops refugees to their deaths, right in front of the Jedi. before they can escape, the militia spot them and sent for their Captain Relik. K'kruhk sends the younglings and Master Zao into the forest to hide while he draws off the militia, destroying their cargo ship just as Relik and his men arrive. Back in the city, Teron sends a request for help to Captain Denimoor of the Tenacious in the name of a general they used to serve under, and he immediately sets course for Arkinnea. In the forest, one youngling named Sidirri fears for K'kruhk and so Zao brings her back from the brink of the dark side while K'kruhk systematically puts down his attackers. Meanwhile, the militia finds the younglings as well as a large primitive species and prepares to gun them all down so as to have no witnesses. In order to prevent this Zao reveals himself as a Jedi and tells the others to escape into the forest while he holds them off. To his surprise, Sidirri stays to help, but uses a large boulder to kill all the militia threatening them. They make their escape as the Imperials arrive to arrest Relik for his crimes, and Teron stays behind to contact K'kruhk. He explains that he doesn't believe the Imperial propaganda because he remembers serving under K'kruhk in the Clone Wars. Teron vows to provide supplies to help the Jedi survive, and is good to his word for five years before he stops coming. In that time Sidirri runs away, followed by Master Zao, but those who remain continue to carry the torch of the Jedi.
