Darth Vader is sent to Bandomeer to put down a rebellion while Dass Jennir arrives at Telerath with his droid H2, looking for his new employer, Ember Chankeli. He is picked up by a water taxi driver named Fish and quickly learns that there are two gangs, the slavers and the spice runners, which means that Ember wasn't entirely truthful with him. He arrives at the slaver tryouts where he stops a young man from dueling and being killed by Mors Demanna, and in the process learns of Sword Law before the tryouts are over for the day. Later, after he meets up with Ember and does what he can for the injured boy, he goes to Telerath's second moon where the spicers do all their processing and kills all of them, leaving a message to the higher ups in the spice runners organization by making it look like the slavers did it. On Bandomeer, Vader realizes that the clones must have orders regarding him that are similar to Order 66, and decides he needs to be more careful. Back on Telerath, Demanna approaches Dass and takes him before Boss Musori to offer him a job. The tryout is a duel, and Dass holds his own for a while before yielding. Instead of accepting the offer, he insults them and leaves. He is then confronted by spicers and taken to Ken-Kiba, their boss. Dass tells him that he doesn't want to get involved and then tells him about the supposed slaver attack on their facility on the moon. With everybody successfully manipulated, the spicers go to war against the slavers, wiping them out. Dass returns to Ember's place where he tries to get everyone away but it's too late and Ken-Kiba arrives. Ember told him everything about what Dass was up to and Ken-Kiba wants revenge. Dass gets away with the help of one of Ember's slaves and Fish, and in a rage, Ken-Kiba takes Ember prisoner as well. Dass puts himself in a healing trance, and emerges to feel a renewed commitment. The spicers arrive and capture Fish, so Dass takes his weapons and returns to clean up the mess. He frees Ember's slaves, defeats Demanna but gives him a chance to turn his life around, and then frees Ember. He makes his way to the headquarters of the spicers where they are torturing Fish, and confronts them. When Ember asks him what he's doing, he lights his lightsaber and replies "My job."
