Dass Jennir is on Cato Neimoidia, looking for mercenary work that he can feel comfortable with. One night a woman comes in and offers a job protecting her town from a ruthless gang that has taken over, and he decides this might be what he is looking for. Unfortunately, another mercenary, a rather large reptilian being, thinks the same way and attacks him. He defeats the other mercenary and returns to the ship he took from the cannibalistic Dezono Qua after killing him, where he informs the sarcastic droid H2 of his plan. The next morning he and another mercenary meet with Ember Chankeli, who tells them about the forty member gang they need to eliminate. They are interrupted by the reptilian mercenary and some friends, and Dass beats them badly. He returns to Ember, the only one willing to take the job, and she mentions that the gang is a group of slavers. He accepts the job readily, even after she mentions the gang may actually be fifty members instead of forty.
