Chewbacca is busy working when he is interrupted by Ralrra telling him that Tarfful has just undergone his Hrrtayyk. Chewie is frustrated because he thinks that he is ready for his own Hrrtayyk, and so leaves for the Shadowlands to prove to himself that he is ready, and his friends Tarfful and Ralrra go with him as well as two young pups Saarcheen and Barraak. Chewie easily faces every challenge he is faced with until he gets in a fight with Tarfful that is broken up when the come upon a group of slavers. Tarfful argues that they should return to the village and warn the others, while Chewie wants to stay and fight. The choice is taken from them when the slavers find them, and Chewie and Tarfful leave the pups in the care of Ralrra. Following Chewies example, Barraak attempts to join the fight, only to have a slaver kill him immediately. Chewie tells Ralrra to take Saarcheen and run while he and Tarfful occupy the slavers. With them gone, Chewie admits that its his fault this happened, and Tarfful tells him its time to start acting like an adult and stop the slavers. They fight, but they are overmatched, but just as they are about to be killed the rest of the adults in the village arrive to stop the slavers. Feeling guilty for the results of his actions, Chewie vows that he will never again put someone he cares about in danger again if he doesn't have to.
