Kevin J. Anderson
Swap Meet: The Jawa's Tale
Cover Artist: Stephen Youll
Het Nkik is a Jawa with odd ideas. While the rest of his species is content with being cowards and avoiding conflict with the humans and the Tusken Raiders, he understands that his people would be a force to be reckoned with, if they would only stand together and refuse to be weak. When the sandcrawler he is on arrives at a Jawa swap meet, and his ideas of strength are refused again by several clan leaders, he is approached by another Jawa named Hrar Kkak, who has a blaster for sale. After verifying that it works and bargaining successfully, Het Nkik is the proud owner of a blaster and an idea starts to form in his head. After the swap meet, his sandcrawler continues on its way, and soon comes across the a missing sandcrawler, the one his best friend Jek Nkik crewed on. As they stop, they learn that all the Jawas on board the missing crawler are dead, and an old man has begun the ritual burning of their dead. When the Jawas learn that it was Imperials who killed them, the are determined to continue as before, but Het Nkik decides that he needs to do something different and provide an example for his people, so he takes a speeder to Mos Eisley. In the cantina there, he meets a Ranat who has a Tusken Raider talisman for bravery, and so he bargains for it, takes his blaster back from the Ranat and goes to lay in wait for a Stormtrooper patrol. When he sees one, he grabs his blaster and charges, letting out a war cry as he goes.
