Three years after Obi-Wan Kenobi defeats a Sith Lord, we find him struggling to keep up with his apprentice, Anakin Skywalker. Anakin, for his part, is still very much a thrill junkie, though he does experience moments of clarity in the Force. Obi-Wan is finding that Anakin is challenging him in much the same way that his deceased Master challenged him, which is sometimes difficult for him to accept.

At the start of this book, we find Anakin indulging in a life or death contest because apparently he doesn't find his training in the Jedi Temple stimulating enough. In order to help him with his focus, he and Obi-Wan are sent on a mission to track down a missing Jedi by the name of Vergere who was last seen on a planet by the name of Zonama Sekot, where Anakin will experience one of his first major trials as a Jedi.

This book was released in early 2000, and it discusses briefly an alien race known to the citizens of Zonama Sekot as "The Far Outsiders" whose technology appears to be organic in nature. They are stopped at this point, but shortly before this book came out, we were given the book "Vector Prime" which introduced a race of extragalactic invaders who utilize organic technology. In time, we discover that this is no coincidence.
