This is an "Infinities" tale that can be fitted into the main timeline at a specific point. That doesn't mean the events herein are conclusively true, just that they could be true.

Skippy is the name for the R5 unit near the beginning of Star Wars: Episode IV that ends up with a blown motivator, and allows R2-D2 to leave with Owen Lars, Luke Skywalker, and C-3PO. This story postulates that Skippy was actually self-aware and imbued with a sense of the Force. Near the end, he saw that if he was the droid to leave the Jawas instead of R2-D2 the entire Rebellion would fail because Luke would never leave Tatooine, and R2-D2 would never deliver the Death Star plans to the Rebels. In order to prevent this, Skippy blew his own motivator so the future could come to be.
