Imperial pilot Ranulf Trommer leads an assault against a rebel base on Aguarl 3 that results in the destruction of his entire fighter wing and his own critical injuries, but they are successful in destroying the base. On M'Haeli, Ch'no foresees a major conflict and change approaching the planet, while Ranulf is given a new assignment to spy on the Imperial governor of M'Haeli, Grigor, and learn what he is doing. Grigor suspects Ranulf's mission, and so assigns him to insinuate himself in the affections of the girl Mora and her ward, Ch'no. He sends stormtroopers to kill all of them, but they are rescued by Princess Leia and the rest of the rebels on the planet. As they retreat, Mora and Ranulf are sent to a safe place instead of the rebel base, because Leia isn't certain of him, and they hide there while the H'Drachi elders declare Ch'no an outcast so the Governor won't kill them. Ch'no is taken to Mora, where he tells them that they can prove their intentions by finding proof that Grigor is running a hidden Dragite crystal mine. They agree to look, and find the mine right where Ch'no's precognitive powers said it would be. Infiltrating the mine, they learn that many citizens of M'Haeli are being forced to work there after the governor claimed them as killed in action against rebels. Having the proof that he needs, and believing that an uncorrupted man would govern the planet justly, Ranulf returns to the Imperial base to send a message to his father and arrest the governor, only to find himself a prisoner instead. Merrick, one of the rebels, witnesses Ranulf entering the Imperial compound and reports back to the rebels that they were betrayed. The rebels move base quickly, while Grigor's troops assault and kill many H'Drachi searching for Ch'no and Mora, which inspires the rebels to rescue the prisoners at Grigor's mine. In a jealous fit, Merrik's partner and companion Jalose passes information to a bounty hunter named Glott about where Mora will be, and Ranulf manages to escape imprisonment disguised as a stormtrooper. He arrives at the mine in time to see Mora taken by Glott's crew, and fights Glott to a standstill, but is stopped by Merrick who thinks Glott to be a prisoner and Ranulf a traitor. At the Imperial stronghold, Grigor discover's that Mora is the last surviving member of the royal family. Attempting to use that to his advantage, Jalose realizes what she has done, and the H'Drachi decide that the only way the Empire will defeat them is if they allow it. Ranulf confesses his true nature to the rebels, and with Ch'no's support, he leads Merrick and Jalose on a mission to rescue Mora. As they flee from the compound, Glott gives chase and attempts to kill Mora, but Jalose jumps in the way to save her. Sending Mora on with Merrick, Ranulf stops to finish Glott, which he does with the help of the H'Drachi, but before he dies, Glott passes on the location of the Rebel base to Grigor. Grigor's Imperials launch an assault on the rebels, but are defeated easily, in time to see an invasion of real Imperials coming to replace Grigor. When Ranulf sees that the real Imperials aren't really any different from Grigor's forces, he makes the decision to turn rebel himself and assists in the destruction of the Dragite mine before leaving the planet with the rest of the Rebels.
