A group of bounty hunters and mercenaries captures a rebel pilot who is tortured until he gives up the name of Skywalker as the man who destroyed the Death Star. As soon as they give this information to Darth Vader, he goes on a rampage, eventually killing all of them as far as he knows. He then puts all his efforts into tracking this Skywalker down while the only remaining mercenary, Mala Mala, tries to make her way to Coruscant. Meanwhile at the Rebel Base, Jal Te Gniev, the pilot Luke Skywalker replaced due to sickness, is consumed by his jealousy so much that he is relieved of active duty and sent to Dubrava as a recruiting liaison, where he spends most of his time drinking and bitterly disillusioning young hopefuls. For his part, Luke is paraded around on Jazbina, where his presence may help sway the populace to the rebellion. Playing on that hope, Lord Prepredenko tells Luke that his daughter has been kidnapped and her rescue may go a long way to persuading the populace to the Alliance. On Dubrava, Jal's bitterness results in Luke's whereabouts being reported to the Imperials who promptly begin killing anyone with ties to the Rebellion. Jal escapes, but is cornered by stormtroopers. He is rescued by a youth named Bobek who had been humiliated by him. In the firefight though, he is mortally wounded, and he explains that he had intended to kill Jal, but that the Rebellion was more important than his petty grievances. Chastened, Jal leaves for Jazbina to stop the Empire if he can. Back on Jazbina, Luke heroically rescues the princess from her captors, becoming temporarily blinded in the process, only to learn that she and her "captors" were rebels that her father was trying to capture. When Vader arrives to take custody of Luke, Prepredenko is manipulated into thinking that Vader wants Luke dead, and his daughter manipulates him into thinking that she will do it so she can rescue Luke. Jal arrives on planet to witness a populace primed for rebellion, thanks to the actions of Prepredenko. The only thing stopping them is Vader's ship in orbit, so Jal sacrifices himself to drive the Empire from the planet so they can govern themselves. In the end, Mala Mala recieves an audience with Emperor Palpatine where she passes on to him the name of the man who destroyed the Death Star in exchange for parts to build new droids and a new ship.
