The Empire is increasing their presence in the Belial system, a system where the rebels have no allies or bases. Luke Skywalker, Cinda Tarheel and Berl are dispatched to the planet Serphidi to convince the native Serps to support the rebellion with intelligence on the Empire's activities. Upon arrival at the planet, they are attacked by TIE Fighters which cause damage to Cinda's X-wing before they are destroyed. Landing on Serphidi, the rebels are immediatly attacked by King S'shah who kills Berl and captures Cinda as Luke escapes. In the king's palace, Cinda learns that she will become a meal for the king after the next Doom-joust, as Luke meets and rescues an elder Serp named Elglih. Luke is recruited to help Elglih prepare for the Doom-joust, because that is the only way the current king can be dethroned and a king crowned who is more favourable to the Rebel Alliance. While training Elglih decides that he is too old and frail to succeed against S'shah, and so Luke takes his place and learns how to joust. The day of the Doom-joust arrives and King S'shah agrees to duel with Luke because of Luke's connection to Cinda. Luke manages to pull victory from the jaws of defeat, and King S'shah dies when he tries to cheat and kill Luke. With Elglih installed as the new king, the rebels have a new ally in the Belial system and Luke and Cinda return to base on Arbra.
