While on the run from the Empire, the Rebels create a temporary base on the frozen world of Hoth. While scouting around the base, Luke Skywalker is attacked by a wampa, one of the indigenous predators, and taken back to it's cave as a meal. Waking up he uses the Force to call his lightsaber to him and escapes from the cave, only to collapse in the snow a short time later. Before he passes out, he sees a vision of Obi-Wan Kenobi who tells him to go to Dagobah and train with Master Yoda. Han Solo finds him unconscious and keeps him alive till he can be returned to the base in the morning. Luke recovers from his ordeal in time to help defend the base from an Imperial assault, and as everyone leaves he travels to Dagobah instead where he meets a small gnome-like creature. The creature turns out to be Yoda, and after promising that he will train hard, Yoda agrees to teach him. Meanwhile, Han and Princess Leia are experiencing difficulties with the hyperdrive and are evading the Imperials in an asteroid field. They succeed in hiding on the back of an Imperial Star Destroyer, and when the trash is dropped and the Imperials leave, they limp to Cloud City on Bespin where they hope to make some repairs. On arriving at Bespin, they meet an old friend of Han's named Lando Calrissian who turns them over to the Imperials because the bounty hunter Boba Fett got there first, followed by Darth Vader. As Han is tortured, Luke sees a vision of his friends being hurt, and decides that he must leave to help them but promises that he will return. Yoda expresses concerns that Luke is not ready to face Darth Vader, but Luke can't be persuaded to stay. As Luke arrives at Bespin, Han is put into carbon freeze and carted away to Jabba the Hutt by Boba Fett, and Lando decides that he is done taking orders from the Empire and frees Leia and Chewbacca. They fight their way to the Millennium Falcon as Luke encounters Darth Vader and finds himself in a fight for his life. Eventually Luke is defeated and is given the opportunity to join Darth Vader but refuses to join the man who killed his father. Vader then reveals that he is Anakin Skywalker, Luke's father, and in deisbelief, Luke lets himself fall to what he believes will be his death. He finds himself sliding through garbage disposal chutes until he is hanging from the underside of Cloud City where he uses the Force to call to Leia for help. Aboard the Millennium Falcon, they escape to where the Rebel fleet is hidden and begin to make plans to find Han and rescue him.

The novelization and comics follow the movie fairly closely, but there are some minor differences of note. The most significant differences to my mind are that Yoda is described as being blue, Han never responds with "I know" when Leia says "I love you", and General Veers is killed in his AT-AT when Hobbie Klivian's snowspeeder crashes into it's cockpit. Beyond the minor differences, these are very faithful narratives to one of the most popular Star Wars movies.
