Mara Jade has placed herself in Jabba's Palace to kill Luke Skywalker, but is unsuccessful. She reports in to the Emperor, who is displeased at her failure. She is then given the assignment to kill Dequc, a criminal who is attempting to revive Black Sun through his organization Black Nebula. She finishes the mission more quickly than the Emperor expected, but when she offers to continue her mission to kill Luke, she is told to return to Coruscant and relax. While there, she discovers that she killed a decoy instead of the real Dequc. She begins preparations to correct her mistake, when the Emperor is killed and she receives a vision of his death along with an unshakeable compulsion to kill Luke Skywalker. In her moment of incapacitation, she is taken prisoner by Ysanne Isard, who knows there is something special about Mara, she just doesn't know what. Evantually Mara escapes from Isard and hides on Phorliss as a waitress until her employer is killed by thugs employed by Dequc. Mara decides that she needs to complete the last mission the Emperor gave her, so that she can help ensure the stability of the Empire. Using all the skills she learned as the Emperor's hand, Mara manages to meet with Dequc where she eventually kills him and then disappears so she can continue to live her own life.
