Zayne Carrick has orchestrated a plan to get himself captured by the Crucible so that his forces can find them and wipe them out. He is captured, but then his plan falls apart as they figure out what he's up to fairly quickly. He is put into a pit to fight with a Caamasi, who later uses his races special ability to share with Zayne all the memories of his people in the Crucible for centuries. Zayne is then taken to meet with Chantique, who explains that Jarael stabbed her in the back, ruining her career with the Crucible until she fought her way back years later only to find that Jarael was gone. She tells Zayne that Jarael's name was originally Edessa but that the slaves gave her another name, Jarael, which meant Destroyer in the Crucible language. Zayne is then put back in with the Caamasi to duel again, with weapons this time. The Caamasi explains that his mind has cleared somewhat and tells him that the Crucible is centuries old and was originally created by Darth Ieldis to create conquering armies. They then duel, with Zayne refusing to fight, until the Caamasi has an opportunity to turn his own blade and force Zayne to take his life. Chantique then orders the Crucible packed up, leaving Zayne to his own devices until he is found by Jarael and the rest. He then turns on her berating her, asking her how she could keep the name the slaves gave her. Saddened by his loss of faith in her, she explains that she kept the name because it meant Protector in the language of the Crucible.
