With the help of Xamar, who has turned himself over to the Jedi Council for the chance to save Krynda Draay from what is coming, Zayne Carrick is taken into the Draay estate, pretending to be under the control of the Muur Talisman. While he and Gryph try to bluff their way to see Krynda Draay, Xamar goes and opens the gates of the compound to the Jedi. In the meeting hall, Haazen sees through the plan and reveals the deception to the others before deciding that his time has come to betray the Jedi. As the Jedi attack the Covenant, the Republic ships begin firing on the advancing Jedi, killing Xamar as he foresaw, before the Jedi pull back. In the estate, Haazen explains how he accomplished his plan and the future he wants to those present, even going so far as to name Lucien the trainer of Haazen's future Sith and calling him Darth Sion. The seer Q'anilia awakens and runs off to find Krynda, while Gryph follows and Lucien tries to kill Zayne. Gryph finds Q'anilia in Krynda's room and Krynda in a casket like object. In despair Q'anilia poisons herself before Gryph notices that Krynda is actually in an oubliette and releases her. He helps her down to where Lucien is attacking Zayne and she berates Lucien in despair for the things he has done while Lucien holds her in his arms until she dies from the trauma she has experienced. In his rage, Lucien attacks Gryph and Zayne defends him. As they duel, Zayne tries to convince Lucien that this isn't what he wants, but Lucien feels like there's no way to change the future. In the courtyard, Haazen finally obtains the Sith artifacts that the Jedi Council has been holding, as Gryph comes running out of the mansion with Lucien and Zayne hot on his trail. As they continue to fight, the statue of Barrison Draay falls on Lucien and Zayne finishes him off. Haazen invites Zayne to come to him and Zayne does so, only to kneel and cut off Haazen's Sith implanted hand. Zayne then grabs Gryph as they fly away, and Haazen is puzzled until Lucien reveals it was all a deception. He then uses the control device for the Republic cruisers to retarget his estate and annihilate it with he and Haazen still there. Days later, the Republic prepares to send its fleet against the Mandalorians, and Haazen's plot is covered up to avoid the embarrasment it would cause everyone involved. The Jedi still refuse to get involved in the war, and the Jedi Alek insists on going by the name Malak until the war is over. The Jedi Council offers to make Zayne a Jedi Knight, but he feels like he isn't cut out for that life, so he goes to work with Gryph, hoping to do some good, while Jarael decides to stay and help the Mandalorian Rohlan Dyre find what he is looking for. Elsewhere, Lucien, who barely survived the assault on his estate by holding on to a Sith artifact, considered briefly moving to the dark side and becoming the Lord of Pain, but then thoughts of his father directed him in a different direction, and he decided to go to a moon he owned and establish a new Covenant, designed to help the Jedi ways survive the coming tribulations.
