Following Gryph's call for help on Taris, Zayne Carrick inserts himself into the Mandalorian controlled world with the help of Rohlan Dyre. He learns that there is a resistance on planet, but the criminal elements and the lawkeeper elements can't agree with each other. Zayne is meant to be a peace offering between the two groups, but Zayne manages to find the family of the constable and uses that to bring the resistance together. When they finally meet, he is confronted by Shel, the sister of one of his fellow padawans and the girl he used to imagine himself settling down with after he failed out of the Jedi Order. She tries to kill him, but is thwarted by a case he is carrying, to the dismay of Raana Tey, who has been priming Shel for this. The resistance learns that Cassus Fett is in the Jedi tower and so they plan to defeat him by destroying the tower. In order to make sure he is there, Zayne and Shel infiltrate the tower as a Mandalorian and his prisoner, opening a vent to allow Raana Tey to join them. While Zayne is opening the vent, Shel covertly retrieves her brothers lightsaber, but is unable to kill him. He goes to look for Cassus, and Raana Tey follows him specifically to kill him. Zayne learns that Cassus is no longer there because he has discover the location of the resistance and has gone to attack them there. Before Zayne can warn them, Raana Tey finds him and attacks. They duel and Raana Tey defeats him, but before she can kill him she confesses to what she did and Shel, hearing everything, stabs her with her brother's lightsaber. The two of them escape with the help of Gryph, but Raana Tey is trapped. Zayne offers to save Raana Tey, which takes her completely by surprise. She accepts the offer but her arm is trapped so she ignites her lightsaber to free herself. Gryph misinterprets and detonates the bomb in the building, collapsing it and killing Raana Tey, but not before she asks Zayne to tell Krynda that she is sorry. Q'anilia informs Lucien that Zayne knows, while Zayne comments that at least he has a name he can investigate, even though he lost someone who would clear his name.
