A decade after the war started by Exar Kun and Ulic Qel-Droma, Ulic is looking for a place where he can just hide out until he dies. A pilot named Hoggon takes him to Yavin IV, unaware of the identity of his passenger. Faced with too many memories, Ulic asks him to find another planet and is taken to Rhen Var where the pilot leaves him and goes to witness a large Jedi convocation at Exis Station. At the convocation, the new leader of the Jedi, Nomi Sunrider, is calling on the Jedi to make a new start while Sylvar makes a passion filled speech about the loss of her mate Crado during the war and about Ulic still being at large. Nomi's daughter Vima feels neglected and so sneaks into a mining ship, thinking she can handle it. She can't and just before she loses her life, she is rescued by Tott Doneeta, who is late to the convocation. Tott, on hearing Sylvar's anger, invites her to Ryloth with him to help her overcome it. They are unsuccessful so they go to Cathar for the same purpose, where she loses all control of her anger. Tott returns to the convocation, telling Sylvar that she must control her anger or it will control her. Back at the station, Vima decides that her mother just won't have the time to teach her to be a Jedi, so she sneaks onto Hoggon's ship and convinces him to take her to Ulic to learn. On Rhen Var, she meets Ulic who initially refuses to teach her because she reminds him of Nomi. Eventually he reaches out to help her when it looks like she will die in the snow, and she convinces him to try and help her. Despite being unable to feel the Force, he agrees to help her and the two begin working together, eventually forging her first lightsaber. Hoggon returns to the station to tell Nomi where her daughter is, but her guards won't let him in to speak with her. Meanwhile, Sylvar receives word that Vima has disappeared and returns to Nomi to offer support. Whenshe learns that Vima went to Ulic, she goes off in a rage and is met by Hoggon, who offers to take her to Rhen Var. Nomi finally decides that the Jedi can handle things without her for awhile and sets off to rescue her daughter from Ulic. Arriving on Rhen Var, she tracks them down and learns that her daughter helped Ulic to come to some semblance of peace in his spirit and begin to act again as a Jedi. As he reflects in solitude on what has happened, he is confronted by Sylvar in her anger. He defends himself while trying to convince her that what became of Crado was a result of who Crado was, not a result of what Ulic did. He finally lowers his defenses and she is unable to kill him because she has finally worked through her anger and realizes that Ulic is speaking the truth. When Sylvar lowers her weapon, Hoggon takes a chance and shoots Ulic in the chest, thrilled that he can say he killed the evil Ulic Qel-Droma. As Nomi holds Ulic in her arms, he asks her to forgive him and she explains that she already did, then he gives Vima a token, calling her a Jedi. He then dies and vanishes into the Force and Nomi thanks her daughter, explaining that if it weren't for her, Ulic may never have seen through his own darkness and returned to the light but puzzles over how he could vanish, as he couldn't even touch the Force. Vima tells her that Ulic may not have been able to touch the Force at the end, but he understood it better than all of them, and had the heart of a Jedi.
