With the uprising quelled on Onderon, the Krath, led by Satal Keto and Aleema, begin an uprising of their own, killing their parents and assuming control of the Empress Teta system with Sith powers they learned from artifacts and Freedon Nadd's influence. While Master Arca Jeth and his students establish a base on Onderon, Exar Kun decides that he has learned all he can from his master Vodo-Siosk Baas, and sets of to learn what he can about the ancient Sith. Denied the chance to study artifacts on Onderon, he travels to its moon Dxun to examine the crypt of Freedon Nadd while Ulic Qel-Droma and Nomi Sunrider lead a force to assist the defenders in the Empress Teta system. The Jedi force is defeated in part thanks to Aleema's Dark Side illusions, and they retreat to regroup and reconsider their plan, while Kun is given scrolls from the spirit of Freedon Nadd that direct him to Korriban. On Korriban, Kun is led to an ancient mausoleum, where the spirit of Nadd orchestrates an accident that nearly destroys Kun's body. In fear of death, Kun agrees to accept Nadd's dark side healing, which starts him on the path to the dark side. Meanwhile, the Jedi have gathered at Deneba to discuss the danger posed by the Krath. Ulic volunteers to join the Krath and learn their secrets, then destroying them from the inside out. The Jedi disagree with his plan, but in the middle of the discussion, they are attacked by the Krath forces. Arca saves Ulic, but is himself killed by a war droid. Ulic assumes blame for the death of his master and decides to carry out his plan regardless of what the other Jedi decide, while on Korriban, Kun is forced to draw on the dark side further to save his life, and then travels to Yavin IV to find the remains of Naga Sadow's lost force. On Yavin IV, Kun is captured by the Massassi people and taken to a temple where he is forced to call on the dark side again to save himself from ancient creatures. With his victory, he obtains a Sith amulet that gives him the power to utterly destroy Nadd's spirit, but not before he sends a warning to Satal Keto and Aleema that Kun must be destroyed. Ulic is taken prisoner by the Krath at the city of Cinnagar, where Aleema manipulates him and Satal Keto tries to kill him. Concerned for Ulic, to whom she has grown very close, Nomi Sunrider tries to rescue him but is captured herself. She manages to escape and Satal Keto reveals that it was his command that killed Master Arca. In a rage, Ulic kills him, but before he dies, he laughs because he had poisoned Ulic with a Sith poison that amplifies a connection to the dark side of the Force, cementing Ulic's destiny. Nomi returns with a Jedi force including Cay, Ulic's brother, and they attempt to extract them, only for Ulic to force them away, still convinced that he is doing the right thing. As they leave, Kun arrives to destroy his competitors. He pushes Aleema out of the way and begins dueling with Ulic, who has also obtained a Sith amulet. With the two amulets brought together, the spirit of Marka Ragnos appears and proclaims Exar Kun the new Dark Lord of the Sith, and Ulic Qel-Droma his first apprentice.
