Many Jedi have answered Revan's call to join the fight against the Mandalorians. One group, led by Dorjander Kace, are assisting Captain Dallan Morvis and the Phaeden militia to drive back the Mandalorians on Essien. Drafted into the militia when he returned home to visit his family, Zayne Carrick is a constant headache to his commanders because he refuses to kill unarmed enemies. When Morvis suggests they burn a forest down rather than have to search it for enemies, Kace agrees and Zayne decides he's had enough and deserts. Attempting to warn the Mandalorians, he discovers it is a trap, just before the attack commences. While inspecting his work, Morvis finds Zayne, who shows him it was a trap just in time for the Mandalorians to attack. With the Republic soldiers captured, the Mandalorian leader appears and reveals himself as Dorjander Kace. He and the Jedi with him have all defected to the Mandalorians and now the Republic soldiers will be forced to work for the Mandalorians. As part of the Mandalorian army, they next attack Halthor, and Zayne still refuses to kill anyone. After the battle, Zayne's rally master Kra'ake is furious with him and Captain Morvis for not fighting and is ready to teach them a lesson when Ko Sornell steps in to prevent it and gets saddled with the responsibility for them. She has them taken to her house so she can keep a better eye on them, and when Zayne learns that she is a comm specialist, he asks her to get a personal message to a friend; she says she'll think about it. During the night, Morvis tries to kill Sornell, but can't get up the nerve. When Zayne alerts her she sends him to the slave huts, while Kace takes Zayne aside and explains that their next target is Phaeda and Zayne may be able to influence the outcome there if he helps Kace and his knights. They board the Relentless and upon arriving at Phaeda, they execute a trick that allows them to get diverted to Phaedacomm, a communications station where they wanted to go in the first place. At the station, Zayne learns that the reason for all their subterfuge is because they want to kidnap the young Jedi students on Dantooine and raise them as Mandalorian. Ko Sornell disagrees with this tactic and so she agrees to allow Zayne to try to prevent it and he sneaks back to Halthor to steal a dreadnought. Enlisting the help of the Republic prisoners, he bluffs his way onto the bridge of the dreadnought Parjai and plays on the superstitions that Mandalorians have of Jedi to frighten them off the ship. Commandeering it, the Republic troopers race to Dantooine to stop Kace as he begins his assault. As the battle on Dantooine ends, a shuttle from the Parjai arrives and the Zayne, dressed as a Field Marshal attempts to trick Kace and his followers into leaving the Jedi with them, and it almost works. Being prepared though, means that Zayne can destroy the shuttle and they can escape in the Reciprocity. Kace won't give up though, and Zayne has to keep him away, allowing the Republic troops to escape with the children. In the end, Kace and his followers are taken prisoner and put on trial, while Zayne gets to go see his family and Jarael before joining the crew of the Reciprocity to act as an adviser to Captain Morvis.
