The Old Republic: The Third Lesson
Paul S. Kemp
The Old Republic: The Third Lesson
Cover Artist: Unknown
As the Sith retreat from Alderaan, Darth Malgus senses a Jedi presence on the surface. In his rage, he attacks and is buried as the Jedi drops a building on him. After reflecting on a lesson his father taught him about how his emotions are useless if they aren't controlled and directed, he shrugs off the rubble and continues towards the Jedi with a little more restraint. As they duel, Malgus seeking the satisfaction of a lightsaber kill, he remembers the second lesson his father taught him, that sometimes enemies will give the appearance of weakness in order to secure a victory. He steps back for a moment and stretches out with the Force to find another Jedi hiding in the ruins. After a whirlwind attack, Malgus uses the Force to pull the hidden Jedi out of cover and choke him to death. The remaining Jedi charges Malgus, but Malgus attacks him with Force lightning until he collapses. Standing over the Jedi, he remembers the third and last lesson his father taught him by showing him an empty cage. The Jedi looks at Malgus, wondering if he is being shown mercy, and Malgus stabs him through the chest. As he walks away, he reflects that sometimes in life, there isn't any deeper meaning.
