Theron Shan, the son of Satele Shan, is working as an investigator for the Republic when he breaks up a meeting with some Black Sun thugs for information about a slaving ring. After incapacitating most of the thugs, he tries to get information out of a Twi'lek girl named Teff'ith who refuses to talk. In a hurry to get to another appointment, he secures her aboard his ship while he takes care of his other business. At his meeting, he is informed that one time Jedi Master Ngani Zho has resurfaced near Sith space. As Zho was claiming to have been in the Vesla system, one of the systems ceded to the Sith in the treaty, the Republic is keen to get their hands on him, to find out what is going on at Vesla. Theron is sent to retrieve Zho, and because Teff'ith still won't speak, she gets to accompany him. After several weeks of searching, Theron finally finds Zho, spouting off about Vesla, in time to be set upon by Sith Knights, a creation of Darth Mekhis. As they flee to Theron's ship, he has the armory unlocked and Teff'ith them in order to avoid the Sith. On the ship, Zho insists that they go to Vesla, but can't remember why they need to. Theron reports in and is told to get all the information he can out of Zho, and so they set course for Port Nowhere. While there, they manage to obtain clearance and navigation charts for Sith space while they learn to work a little better as a team. Using this data, they soon arrive at Vesla Unhindered and set up camp on one of the outer planets. After assembling the surveillance equipment, Theron examines the other worlds in the system to find several planets utterly destroyed, and a facility built around the sun, apparently harvesting its energy. Zho begins to have a breakdown as he starts to remember what he had seen as they lift off, attempting to escape too late. Taken aboard the facility called the Sun Razer and interrogated, Theron is shown all the Sith plans in the hope that he will switch sides, to no avail. After being left alone, Theron and Zho escape and are reunited with Teff'ith, and they decide that they need to destroy the Sun Razer, at all costs. Zho and Teff'ith create a distraction to allow theron to infiltrate the control center of the Sun Razer, where he is captured by Darth Mekhis' Sith Knights. Before they can kill him though, he manipulates Mekhis into coming close enough for him to take her down with one of his toxic darts. He resets the shields and retreats to his ship in time to escape, but Zho didn't make it as he sacrificed himself to save Teff'ith. Theron releases Teff'ith and makes his report before heading out on another mission, stopping at Tython long enough to tell his mother about Zho's death without revealing the truth about himself.
