Andur Sunrider is taking his wife Nomi, daughter Vima and a crate of Adegan crystals to Master Thon in the Stenness system, when he is killed by a Hutt crimelord. At the urging of Andur's spirit, Nomi takes up his lightsaber and defends their daughter, then uses the Force to fly them to Master Thon's world, Ambria, where she hopes to deliver the crystals for her husband. As she walks through the wilderness, she passes a lake filled with the dark side of the Force, but something helps her walk by and eventually meet a Jedi riding a beast. They go down into the Jedi's home and Nomi tells her story. As she finishes, the Hutt that arranged for Andur's death arrives, still looking for the crystals. The Jedi goes out to meet him, but is soon overwhelmed, but before he can be killed, the beast he was riding intercedes, driving out the invaders. The Jedi introduces the beast as Master Thon, a great Jedi, and himself as Oss Wilum. Months pass with Nomi left to herself, until one day Oss Wilum is called to assist Master Arca on Onderon. Master Thon decides it is time for Nomi to confront her destiny and takes her and Vima out into the wilderness. While out there, he teaches her several important lessons about being a Jedi, and then tells her it is time to build her own lightsaber. Faced with the specter of defending her child after the death of her husband, Nomi refuses time and again. Eventually, Bogga the Hutt sends a team of enforcers to kill Master Thon and stela the Adegan crystals. Thon and his apprentice race back to their home where he insists Nomi take up the lightsaber to defend them. She refuses and leaves while Thon turns himself in. Taking one of his lessons to heart, Nomi uses her innate skill in Jedi Battle Meditation to turn the pirates and enforcers on one another, which causes the last barrier to break in her mind. She takes up Master Thon's lightsaber and advances into the ranks of the pirates, freeing Thon, and together they drive the pirates back. Thon reflects on Nomi's destiny to be a great Jedi while he tells her that sometimes they need enemies to force them to reach beyond themselves.
