Zayne Carrick is a walking disaster, a padawan with a small affinity for the Force. He is one of five padawans on Taris who are looking forward to the upcoming knighting ceremony, though Zayne holds little hope that he will be one of the knighted. On the day of the ceremony, he finally manages to catch and arrest a small-time crook who had been eluding him, Marn "Gryph" Hierogryph. Arriving at the temple with his prisoner in tow, he goes to the meeting room and finds all the other padawans dead at the feet of their masters. Realizing what lies in store for him, he runs, taking Gryph with him. They run through the city, evading their hunters until they reach a place called the Last Resort. The inhabitants, Jarael and Camper, try to chase them away, but it is too late; the Jedi have found them. The four make an escape in the Last Resort, a garbage hauler and hide in the asteroid belt. While there, Zayne decides to go to the last place where he, his friends and their masters were all together; the rogue moon. While there, he has a glimpse of inspiration and finds the remains of a lifter droid called Elbee. The Jedi find them again, but the Last Resort is there in time to rescue them and the droid. Camper repairs the droid and accesses its memory so they can see what it saw before it fell off the cliff. While the padawans are all out making their journey, the masters all meditate on the future. They all experience different visions of disaster and destruction, but the one common thread is the image of someone in an environment suit exactly like what the padawans are currently wearing. Taking this to mean that one of the learners is going to bring destruction on the Jedi and the Republic, they determine that they must all die. At that point, Zayne's master Lucien Draay forces Elbee of the cliff and the recording ends. Soon after, they are found by a pirate crew acting as bounty hunters, and Gryph works out a deal that will allow them all to go free as long as the pirates can take Zayne back for the bounty. After talking with Jarael, Zayne decides that it is for the best and turns himself in. He is taken before the masters, where they explain that they are part of a Jedi Covenant formed after Exar Kun's fall, devoted to preventing the rise of the Sith. They make plans to track down Zayne's helpers after they kill him, but he is rescued at the last minute by Jarael, dressed in one of the environment suits. Three weeks later, as the Jedi masters prepare to return to Coruscant under recall by the council, Lucien gets a message from Zayne. He tells them that he has had a vision where one of them has confessed and cleared his name, and he will hunt them all down saying that the one who confesses will live. He then tells Lucien that if he brings down the Jedi order, Lucien needs to remember that he started it.
