A Fair Trade
Paul S. Kemp
A Fair Trade
Cover Artist: Unknown
Khedryn Faal joins his copilot Marr Idi-Shael in the cockpit of their ship, the Seeker, after spending the previous night drinking and gambling. As they leave Fhost, they set course for a derelict that they had been unable to salvage earlier due to equipment malfunction. As they prepare salvage operations, another ship comes out of hyperspace and fires on them immediately. The captain of the other ship, Reegas Vance, contacts them and informs them that he is taking the derelict and their ship, and they have 10 minutes to debark. Khedryn has Marr render their engines non-functional as well as hide their life signs, and then they launch the lifepod empty. When Reegas scans the pod and finds it empty, he has it shot down, and then his team boards the Seeker. As they search the ship, Khedryn and Marr move across the void and begin their attempt to break into Reegas' ship. When Reegas finds that no one is on the ship, he suspects that Khedryn and Marr are on the derelict ship, trying to get it moving, and so orders his crew to disable its engines. Just as Khedryn and Marr get past the security system of the other ship, they are shot at by the last crewmember aboard, who injures Marr before he is killed by Khedryn. Khedryn then informs Reegas that they are aboard his ship, which they are taking, before they destroy the shuttle. Reegas promises that he won't forget anything that has happened, and Khedryn considers the ship he has now to be a fair trade for what he gave up, and they rename her Junker and move on.
