The New Republic cruiser Endor is looking for signs of suspicious activity when it is fired upon and destroyed from a dead planet. Kir Kanos, in his guise as Kenix Kil, is assaulted after collecting a bounty. He kills all his attackers and is then approached by Boba Fett. On Coruscant, Mirith Sinn informs Princess Leia that she wants to resign her position, but agrees to take a day to think it over. On Yavin IV, Luke Skywalker is training Jedi recruits when Vima-Da-Boda warns him that the Republic and his family are in danger from a man named Devian. Boba Fett delivers Kanos to a place General Vota calls the heart of the Restored Empire. On Nyara, an assault team steals a quantity of Zinethium from a toxic weapons dump. General Vota explains to Kanos that he is a guest, but he won't be allowed free reign until after he's talked to their host and takes him to his quarters where there is an Imperial Guard uniform. On Orinda, Feena D'Asta meets with Admiral Gilad Pellaeon to let him know that her father strongly suggests a truce with the New Republic. When Pellaeon expresses his concerns about the Moffs rebelling if such an action was undertaken, she assures him that her father will help with that. On Adumar, Nom Anor is inciting the people to rebellion against the New Republic. Back on Coruscant, Mirith thwarts an attempt on the lives of the Solo family, realizing just how loyal she is. Back in the Restored Empire, Kir Kanos is introduced to his host and immediately recognizes him as Ennix Devian, a one time thug and hitman in the Empire. Devian gives an example of his hand to hand combat skills, and then takes Kanos on a tour of his facility, a place where decommissioned ships were sent and maintained in case of a catastrophe. He shows Kanos the zinethium which will be used to strike a blow at the Republic from which they won't recover. He explains that they have learned of the peace treaty that will be extended to the Republic, and that they can't have that. His fleet will be used to strike at the heart of the Empire, and the zinethium will be used to destroy the seat of government for the Republic. When Kanos refuses to join Devian He is escorted back to his quarters, and on Coruscant, Leia and Mirith receive a message from Feena, offering Pellaeon's truce. Luke arrives on Coruscant and explains that the man behind the assassination attempt is Devian, and Kanos escapes from Devian in a shuttle that has been specially prepared for him. Kanos arrives on Coruscant with his warning for Mirith Sinn, who agrees to meet with D'Asta, but only if Kanos can accompany her. As they prepare to leave, Luke and Leia learn that the ship Kanos arrived in is actually a bomb that will level the Senate district. Luke flies the ship away, and it explodes just after he makes his escape. Meanwhile, a ship is sent to investigate the disappearance of the Endor and barely manages to survive as they destroy the weapon that shot down the Endor. Sinn and Kanos meet with D'Asta, and as they begin to talk, they are attacked by stormtroopers. They fight them off even though D'Asta is killed, and learn that they are Devian's men, and after reporting in to Leia, they go to break the bad news to Feena's father who is confused at the actions of the troopers until he learns that they were Devian's men. When Pellaeon learns of the attack, he assumes it was the Republic behind it and sends his fleet to attack Coruscant, leaving a skeleton fleet to defend when Devian's fleet arrives. As the Republic fleet tracks the approaching Imperial fleet, they watch it quickly reverse direction. At Orinda, Devian's troops have nearly taken Pellaeon, when they are stopped by Baron D'Asta and his troops. Pellaeon learns who his traitor was, and Kanos fights and kills Devian, landing on death's door himself. Mirith returns to report on what happened and the death of Kir Kanos, and then tenders her resignation. Several months later, in the D'Astan system, Kir Kanos leaves to make a new life after thanking Baron D'Asta and his daughter, who it turns out is one of the clones of the original Feena D'Asta, as was the Feena that died in the peace meeting.
