Princess Leia and her family are taking a brief vacation in the Corellian system before a trade conference is about to take place. Han Solo is approached by a New Republic Intelligence operative named Belindi Kalenda who warns him that there may be something suspicious going on on Corellia, and asks him to draw attention to himself so that NRI can operate in the system without as much risk. As Belindi arrives in the Corellian system though, she is attacked immediately, which indicates that someone knows exactly what NRI is doing at any given time. In the meanwhile, Luke Skywalker decides to travel with Lando Calrissian who has decided that his next big business venture will be obtaining a wife. After two unsuccessful where he meets someone who will kill him after a few years and someone else who is already married, he meets Tendra Risant. Before he is able to get to know her better though, he and Luke are chased off the planet. He leaves an old fashioned radio wave communicator with her as a romantic gesture, and he and Luke continue their journey to Corellia. On Corellia though events have taken a major turn for the worse. A mysterious interdiction and jamming field has come up, cutting the system of from the rest of the galaxy, and rebellions have started on all 5 of the planets in the system. On the planet Corellia, the Human League, led by Han's cousin Thracken Sal-Solo, has taken Leia, Han and Mara Jade captive while Chewie escaped with the Solo children and their Drall tutor. Aided by Han, Belindi manages to escape the system to give warning to the New Republic, and Luke and Lando return to Coruscant as well after being stopped by the interdiction field.

As the first book in a trilogy, this one does well at giving the heroes a lot of challenges that they have to overcome. This story also leaves us with a few mysteries that need to be solved in the next books.
