The Jedi Academy Trilogy: Dark Apprentice
Kevin J. Anderson
The Jedi Academy Trilogy: Dark Apprentice
Cover Artist: John Alvin
On Yavin IV, Luke Skywalker has managed to collect a small group of potential Jedi that will form the core of the new Jedi Order. Meanwhile, Princess Leia is taking on more and more of Mon Mothma's duties as the Chief Of State becomes more and more sick. On a diplomatic mission with Admiral Ackbar to the planet Vortex, Ackbar's B-wing crash lands directly into the Cathedral Of the Winds. In shame, Ackbar resigns from the New Republic government and travels home to atone for the destruction he caused. When Leia discovers that Mon Mothma is on death's door, she travels to Mon Calamari to persuade Ackbar to return to the council. While there, Admiral Daala decides to attack the planet and cause as much destruction as possible using tactics that were taught to her by Grand Moff Tarkin. When Ackbar takes over the defense of his home planet and destroys one of Daala's three remaining Star Destroyers, she retreats back to the nebula that she has been hiding in. Back on Yavin IV, Luke's top student is having dreams where a dark man is teaching him all sorts of knowledge that Luke is not willing to teach his students. Gantoris builds a lightsaber and challenges Luke, who defeats him after a long battle. With this defeat, Gantoris realizes that maybe Luke is right about the Dark Side, and when the dark man, who is the spirit of Exar Kun, comes again he tries to stand up to him which results in his death. Kyp Durron finally arrives at the Jedi Academy and fairly quickly he falls under the spell of the Exar Kun as well, due to his anger about the life he's had forced upon him by the Empire. After he learns as much as he thinks he can, he decides to take the Sun Crusher and put an end to the Empire once and for all. Using the things Exar Kun has taught him, he leaves Luke in a coma and escapes with the Sun Crusher. His begins his quest in the Cauldron Nebula, where Admiral Daala is planning her next attack, destroying the nebula and apparently Daala as well.

One of my least favorite things about this story and the following one is the fits of temper that Han Solo and Lando Calrissian exhibit. The Millennium Falcon changed hands enough that I got tired of seeing them sit down to play sabacc again. One of the things that makes people want to come back for the next book is all the things that ended badly for the main characters. We want to see what happens to the storylines, and that's incentive to come back.
