In the aftermath of the confrontation with Azlyn Rae and his family on Kiffex, Cade Skywalker and his friends return to their piratical ways. Operating out of Tatooine, and using information from a Black Sun informant, they hit several Imperial transport ships at the same time as Black Sun, that way Black Sun does all the work and they reap the benefits. On their latest outing, a vital part of their ship finally fails and they find themselves stranded on Tatooine being hunted by Black Sun assassins and Imperial agents Morrigan Corde and Gunner Yage. Gunner captures Cade while he's drunk and is transporting him back to the Imperial outpost when they are attacked by assassins as a sandstorm closes in. Cade is led by a vision of Luke Skywalker to the old Lars moisture farm, where they hole up until the sandstorm passes. While Cade sleeps he has another vision of Luke where he is confronted by what he will become if he continues down the path he is on. Cade decides that he doesn't want that for himself and wakes to find himself and Gunner being attacked by Anzati assassins. They fight them off, killing one and capturing the other while Morrigan Corde and Jariah Syn kill the third assassin standing guard outside. While this is happening, Deliah Blue impersonates an Imperial missionary to get a replacement part for the Mynock. The missionary who helps her get the part exposes her fraud, but still helps her with the part, which helps her to see that there actually are good people out there. Cade, Jariah and Morrigan use the assassin's ship to infiltrate Black Sun and face down the Vigo who called for their assassination, and Gunner Yage returns to confront the Moff who had turned traitor against the Empire. Cade works a deal with the Vigo and Morrigan kills him, prompting Cade to leave her behind as he returns to Tatooine to rejoin Deliah Blue, and Gunner kills the Moff for her betrayal.
