On Ossus, while high on deathsticks, Cade Skywalker experiences a vision in which Mara Jade Skywalker and Darth Vader attempt to tell him that he needs to learn to focus and master his Force use. He is awakened when Jedi Master K'kruhk cleanses the toxins from his body. As he recovers, Jedi Masters Wolf Sazen and Shado Vao approach him and Cade asks Sazen to help him complete his training so that he's ready the next time he encounters the Sith. Meanwhile, on Socorro, Jariah Syn and Deliah Blue are betrayed by Rav and turned over to Moff Nyna Calixte, who wants them to help her find Cade. As K'kruhk and Sazen discuss Cade's future two weeks later, Vao and Cade fall into a lost Jedi storage room where they are attacked by several Yuuzhan Vong. The fight is called off when the Yuuzhan Vong shaper Nei Rin recognizes Cade and Shado as Jedi, and she explains that they have guarded the Jedi artifacts ever since the Sith destroyed the academy. After Cade loses his temper with Sazen and they duel, he is instructed to meditate on peace. During his meditation, he remembers the events that led to him becoming a bounty hunter and receives a vision of Luke Skywalker where he is told to rescue Hosk Trey'lis from the Sith that he turned him over to. Nei Rin gives him his father's lightsaber, enhanced with a lambent crystal, and K'kruhk gives him an old droid named R2-D2 to assist him. With R2 in tow, he takes the Mynock and sets course for Coruscant.
