As Owen Lars and the child Luke Skywalker watch the sunset, a cyborg comes running out of the night. Quickly and easily subduing Owen, the creature calls out taunts until Obi-Wan Kenobi appears, and then reveals himself to be Darth Maul. He rants about how he has followed Obi-Wan for years, and they begin to duel. Obi-Wan defeats him fairly easily, but when it comes time to finally end Maul's life, he balks. Before he can decide one way or another, Owen shoots Maul in the head. Obi-Wan offers to take the body and burn it and then asks if Luke is safe. Owen says that he will keep the boy safe, even from Obi-Wan, and then tells him not to come back.
