R2-D2 and C-3PO are keeping a low profile, because the area they are in is close to the Empire and there is a thriving black market for droid parts. Darth Vader decides that the best way to spy on the rebels is to steal R2-D2 and turn him into a spy. After R2 is taken, Luke goes to retrieve him telling C-3PO to meet him there. Luke cobbles together a reasonable imitation of R2 out of spare parts and pulls a switch while the Imperials are otherwise distracted. Luke and R2-D2 leave on a mission just as C-3PO arrives in time to see the Imperials throw the spare parts out of a window. He then sits down in the junkheap, determined to put R2-D2 back together.
